The largest lake in South East Asia, the size and water level varying with the seasons, from about 2,500 sq km (max. depth 2.2m) in the dry season to 13,000 sq km (max. depth over 10m). One of the world's richest sources of freshwater fish. Currently under threat from upstream dams on the Mekong and excessive deforestation.
