Between the 9th and 14th centuries AD, the kings of the Khmer empire ruled over lands from the tip of southern Vietnam to Yunnan in China, and from Vietnam in the east to the Bay of Bengal in the west. They built these extraordinary temples, culminating in the magnificent Angkor Wat, in the area near modern Siem Reap.
